Often you reach a point in your career where you will make a decision – manage people or continue down a different path. If you are stepping into your first people leadership role it can seem daunting, there doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day to do your own role let alone adding additional responsibility to that!
However, if you can prioritise and balance your time, being a leader of a team could be one of the most rewarding aspects of your role.
Here are some tips if you are starting out;
- Set Clear Expectations: As a new people manager, it is important to set clear expectations for your team members. This includes defining their roles and responsibilities, setting goals and targets, and outlining how you will measure their performance. By doing so, your team members will have a better understanding of what is expected of them and be more motivated to meet those expectations.
- Encourage Open Communication: It is important to create an open and transparent environment where your team members feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, ideas, and concerns. Encourage regular feedback sessions and team meetings to discuss progress, challenges, and opportunities. By fostering open communication, you can gain valuable insights into your team’s needs and work towards addressing them.
- Lead by Example: As a leader, your behavior sets the tone for your team. Lead by example by demonstrating professionalism, respect, and a strong work ethic. This will encourage your team members to follow suit and work towards achieving the team’s goals.
- Develop Your Team: Invest in your team members by providing them with the necessary training, resources, and support to succeed in their roles. Encourage them to take on new challenges, and provide opportunities for growth and development. By doing so, you can help your team members reach their full potential and contribute more effectively to the team.
- Celebrate Success: Celebrate your team’s successes, big or small. Recognize their achievements and show appreciation for their hard work and dedication. This will boost team morale, motivate team members to continue performing at their best, and foster a positive team culture.
